The Suite op.2 was written in 1929, shortly before Schmid started his lessons with Schoenberg. Nevertheless, this attractive piece demonstrates a strong affinity with the music of the Second Viennese School.
A second version of the piece, not substancial different to the first one, was written six years later.
The texts chosen by Schmid are from Rainer Maria Rilke's (1875-1926) second volume of the first 'Buch der Bücher' (Book of Books), a collection of poems written during distressful years around 1900.
