Equipped with a sensitive antenna for new trends, in the mid 1920s Hindemith composed several pieces for the emergent radio, an activity subject to particular musical requirements, or rather restrictions. For example, early recording and broadcasting apparatus could only cope with very clear and in a certain sense primitive sounds.  Too many overtones, romantic violin vibratos or large compound ensembles produced no little distortion.

The Drei Stücke für 5 Instrumente (original title : Drei Anekdoten für Radio) conform entirely to the requirements of ideal radio music: they are clear and simple in both style and instrumentation.
