The four Nonets which Hába wrote for the Czech Nonet make it clear that he will go down in history not only as a pioneer of microtonal music but also as a master of form and style, in works in the more familiar idiom of atonal, diatonic music.
The Nonet no. 2 op. 41 (Fantasia for Nonet in the Seven-note System) was written in 1932. The work is based on the seven medieval modes (Phrygian, Lydian etc.). Central to each of the twenty-three short episodes, which flow into one another, is one of the notes of the Dorian mode (equivalent to the white piano keys from D to D).
