Blitzstein wrote a number of pieces for player piano to accompany the abstract film Hände, made in 1928 by the American film director Stella Simon, assisted by the Berlin painter and film director Hans Richter (a pioneer of the silent, abstract film).
Now the property of the MoMa in New York, with the help of the Netherlands Film Museum the film was brought to the Netherlands and shown several times during the concert series Bits & Pieces.
Werner Herbers arranged Blitzstein's music for a mixed ensemble.
